The Gold Coast and Local Surroundings The Gold Coast region stretches along 57 kilometres of coastline and spans across 1,402 square kilometres (approximately 541 square miles) featuring 70 kilometres of coastline from South Stradbroke Island to Rainbow Bay.
In 1998, research highlighted that the Gold Coast region is the most biologically diverse region of its kind in Australia. Its vegetation ranges from mountain rainforest to coastal wetlands and is home to more than, 323 species of bird, 72 species of mammals, 71 species of reptile, 34 species of amphibians, and 25 species of fish.
